GATE Client: Ruttenberg Cancer Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York Funded as part of a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this interactive touch screen kiosk was developed for the Derald H. Ruttenberg Cancer Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. The kiosk will be used by African American women from East Harlem making a decision whether or not to be tested for BR(east)CA(ncer)1 or BRCA2 susceptibility genes. The purpose of the kiosk is two-fold - education and assessment. In the education portion of the kiosk study participants are presented with a number of issues to consider when making the decision about genetic testing. They are then asked to apply what they learned and consider their own views on whether they want to be tested or not. At the end of each section, participants are asked to rate the importance and relevance of particular topic to their own life. Participants are given the opportunity to review and modify their choices at the end of the program to accurately reflect their opinion on testing. |
